SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's volleyball dropped its fourth-straight West Coast Conference match as the Bulldogs were outplayed by Santa Clara University, ranked 20th in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll, Saturday afternoon at the Martin Centre. The Broncos, who now lead the WCC with a perfect 4-0 mark and a 12-3 overall record, swept the match 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. With the loss, the Zags are now 6-13 overall and 0-4 in WCC action.

Gonzaga was held to just 36 kills with junior Michelle Boevers leading the way for the second-straight match. Boevers finished with a match-high 16 kill and had a .344 hitting percentage. Senior Elaina Renius and freshman Kaprina Goodwin were the only other Bulldogs to finish with five or more kill; each tallying six.

Freshman setter Denise Van de Mortel passed out 28 assists for GU as the Zags connected for only a .179 attacking clip on the day.

Santa Clara's offense was quite the opposite of Gonzaga's as the Broncos had 50 kills on the day and a .302 hitting percentage. The well rounded offense was led by Brittany Lowe and Krista Kelly who had 14 and 11 kills, respectively.

The Zags held the 10-6 advantage in blocks though, while the Broncos held the slight 37-30 advantage in digs. Sophomore Allyson Powell finished with a team-high nine digs for GU and Renius had a match high six blocks.

 

 

Gonzaga returns to action Monday, Oct. 13 when its host in-state rival Eastern Washington University at the Martin Centre. Match time is set to begin at 7 p.m.
