CHENEY, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team opened the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington University Tournament with numerous victories Friday on the campus of Eastern Washington at Cheney, Wash.

Gonzaga, Eastern Washington, the University of Idaho, the University of Montana and Lewis-Clark State College are all participating at the three-day tournament.

In the main singles draw, the Bulldogs' Aglaya Kokurina, Carrie Schofield, Kristen MacWilliam, Rika Mehndiratta, Danielle Farmer, Emily Anderson and Courtney Lau all posted victories in order to advance to the round of 16.

Kokurina defeated Montana's Lehman in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). Schofield earned a straight set victory (6-1, 6-3) over the Grizzles' Ness. MacWilliam posted a three-set win (6-3, 3-6 1-0 (5)) over Siwa of Idaho. Mehndiratta, who won the No. 2 singles title at the Cougar Classic last week, posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Eastern Washington's Aragones. Farmer defeated the Eagles' Liening in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Anderson posted a straight-set victory (6-1, 6-0) over LCSC's Peck and Lau earned a victory over Demerath (6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (9).

In doubles play, the Zags' duos of Anderson and Kokurina, Katie Colton and Allyson Lee, Farmer and Mehndiratta, as well as Clare Dodge and Lau all advanced to the quarterfinals.

Anderson and Kokurina defeated the Idaho team of Demerath and Leuenberger (9-7). Colton and Lee posted an 8-1 victory over Liening and Aragones of EWU. Farmer and Mehndiratt earned a spot in the quarterfinals with a 8-1 victory over Montana's Lehman and Souza. Rounding out doubles victories, Lau and Dodge defeated Irimescu and Siwa of Idaho with a score of 8-5.

 

 

The Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Invitational continues through Sunday at the Eagles' campus at Cheney.
