WASHINGTON, D.C. - Gonzaga University men's varsity 8+ was edged by Temple University Friday in the 20th annual George Washington Invitational Regatta on the Potomac River.

This year's regatta departs from the traditional heats and finals format it has used in the past and instead each team will compete in three dual or trial races - one on Friday afternoon and two on Saturday.

The races are being held on a 2,000-meter, four-lane buoyed course which begins near the Sprout Run area of the Potomac River with the finish line at Washington Harbour in Georgetown.

The Bulldogs will be back in the water Saturday at 8:54 a.m. PDT. The Zags will race against two ranked opponents as they are pitted against 16th-ranked Georgetown University and 18th-ranked University of Michigan. Gonzaga's final race of the weekend begins at 2:08 p.m. PDT Saturday with the Bulldogs matched against 20th-ranked and host George Washington University.

Temple captured Friday's race in 5:34.10 while Gonzaga finished a half boat length behind in 5:35.9. Florida Institute of Technology was third in 5:50.10. Temple led from start-to-finish, Gonzaga beginning its final push in open water with 1,000 meters to go but could not overtake the Owls.

Friday's racing was held in 40-degree temperatures with gusting winds. A tailwind lessened throughout the day to calm the water. Winds gusting from 5-20 mph created some chop in the second 1,000 meters of the 2,000-meter course.

Gonzaga's lineup for the weekend is coxswain LeeAnne Templeman, Warren North, Scott McCoy, Pat Swihart, David Hinshaw, Brendan McCarthy, Matt Wernette, Bryan Franceschi, Andre' Gallant.
