Men's Rowing Freshman 8+ Wins Semifinal Race

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing Freshman 8+ won the semifinal 3 Friday on the second day of the IRA National Championships held at Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Bulldogs, clocking in their first finish of the championships under six minutes, won their race by four seconds to claim a spot in the 3rd Level Final on Saturday. The Varsity 8+ placed fifth in their semifinal to garner a spot in the 4th Level Final tomorrow. The Zags, racing in their third race in two days, captured the semifinal 3 victory with a time of 5:58.976; only their second sub-six minute finish this season. Georgetown University came in second, crossing the finish line in 6:02.558. Rounding out the top three was Colombia University who had a finish of 6:04.077. Rounding out the rest of the field was George Washington University (4th, 6:07.277), MIT (5th, 6:10.381) and the University of Pennsylvania (6th, 6:10.566). Gonzaga will now race in the 3rd Level Final at 8:00 a.m. ET against Columbia University, Georgetown, Cornell University, Dartmouth College and Hobart College. The best the Bulldogs can finish is 13th in the nation. The Freshman 8+ is currently ranked 18th in the IRA Freshman 8+ Coaches Poll. The Bulldog Varsity 8+ had their best time of the championships, clocking in at 6:01.368. Unfortunately, four different squads finished with times under six minutes. The University of Michigan earned the semifinal 4 victory with a time of 5:52.823. Boston University came in two seconds later at 5:54.533, while Pennsylvania claimed third place at 5:55.196. Purdue University finished the course in 5:57.658, four second ahead of the Zags. Rounding out the field was George Washington with a time of 6:01.539. GU will close out the championships on Saturday with the 4th Level Final at 11:48 a.m. ET. The Bulldogs will row against George Washington, Purdue, Georgetown, Colgate, and the College of Holy Cross. The best the Zags can finish overall is 19th. Currently GU is ranked 21st in the IRA Coaches Poll.
