Zags Baseball Players Earn Summer League Honors
Aug. 4, 2003 SPOKANE, Wash. - Five Gonzaga University baseball players have earned All-Summer League recognition in the various summer leagues in which they are playing. Jeff Culpepper, David Johnson and Eric Dworkis all earned first-team honors this summer while Marshall Bratton collected second team honors and Jackson Brennan was an honorable mention selection. Culpepper earned first-team All-Alaska League honors playing for the Alaska Goldpanners club this summer. Culpepper hit .323 for the summer with 27 RBI as he also earned several votes for All-Alaska League MVP. Culpepper helped the Goldpanners win the Alaska League title with a 34-17 record. During a game against the Peninsula Oilers on July 23, Culpepper set a new Alaska League record for hits in a game as he finished the contest 7-for-7 with a home run. Johnson and Dworkis earned first team All-Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League honors with both Bulldogs playing for the Northern Ohio Baseball Club. Johnson led the GLSCL with 28 RBI and finished tenth in the batting race with a .357 average. Johnson earned a mid-season spot on the GLSCL All-Star team that played against Team USA. Dworkis was a force on the mound for Northern Ohio Baseball as he posted a 3-0 record and finished second in the GLSCL with a 0.78 ERA. Dworkis helped his club win the regular-season title with a 32-9 record. In late July Dworkis tossed eight innings during a 6-3 loss to Team USA.
Bratton and Brennan both played in the Pacific International League with Bratton earning second honors for the Wenatchee AppleSox and Brennan claiming honorable mention honors for the Spokane RiverHawks. Bratton led the PIL with 11 doubles and finished the season hitting .320 as Wenatchee won the PIL championship. Brennan played in only 16 games for the RiverHawks but was among the league leaders in average as he hit .385 for the season. Brennan won PIL Player of the Week honors in the final weekend of competition.
