Box Score

Lewiston, Idaho - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision Sunday to Lewis-Clark State College at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho. The game was played as an exhibition, meaning that the outcome of the game does not reflect in the Zags' record nor will the stats count towards season totals.

The Bulldogs (3-5) used three pitchers in the contest with sophomore Jeremy Stumetz (0-0) suffering the loss. Stumetz threw 4.2 innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out four. Jake Adkins and Andrew Danner also saw time on the mound. Adkins allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings, while Danner threw one inning of perfect ball. Lewis-Clark State (12-2) used four pitchers on the afternoon including winning pitcher Ryan Woods (1-0). Woods earned the victory allowing two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings.

The Warriors opened scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second with three hits including a two-run double by Travis Georgius. Georgius would then come around to score the final run of the inning thanks to a ground out by Nic Benton.

The lead didn't last for long though, as Gonzaga rallied in the third to knot the score at 3-3. Evan Wells, Jason Chatwood and Ryan Wiegand all recorded runs for GU as Wells scored on a double by Wiegand. Chatwood and Wiegand scored on singles by Brett Nicholas and Mark Castellitto, respectively.

The Bulldogs took control of the lead in the top of the fourth when Wiegand recorded his second hit of the afternoon, a two-run double to centerfield.

LCSC answered GU's two runs with a run of its own to tie the score 4-4 in the bottom of the frame as Chris Valencia scored on a wild pitch.

The Warriors regained the lead for good in the fifth inning, as they combined for four runs on five hits, all of which came with two outs in the inning. Highlighting the inning was a two-run single to left center by Nic Benton.

Gonzaga rallied in the sixth, posting two runs on a single down the right field line by Anthony Synegal to score Wiegand and Nicholas. The Bulldogs had an opportunity to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize, leaving the tying and go-ahead runs stranded on the corners.

Five Zags recorded multiple hits in the contest, including Nicholas who went 3-for-5 with one run batted in and a run scored. Wiegand also posted a strong offensively effort, scoring two runs while driving in three on two hits and three walks.

The Bulldogs will return to action Firday with they kick-off a nine game spring break trip with a three-game series at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. The opening game of the series will be Friday at 6 p.m.
